GREECE DAY 3 - SEPTEMBER 16, 2008 - PALAMIDI CASTLE, MYCENE, TREASURY OF ATRIUS, OLYMPIA AND BACK TO TOLO

A laid back couple holding up traffic on the main drag through town, gotta love this place
One of the many gate of the Palamidi Castle over Naphlio

Well I guess if I had a choice I'd be on this side of the wall trying to shoot out

Lots of other fortresses in the distance

Beth looking down into the passage leading to a water cistern that was feed from the mountains behind Mycene. Kind of important if you want to wait out a siege.

A villiage in the mountains on the way to Olympia. This is the view from a curve in the road (narrow short curve) where "Efnacio" (not sure of the spelling) whittles his walking sticks and salad spoons & forks etc. he is a very personable elderly gentleman who markets his wares all over the place. He has magazine exerpts to prove his points. He is willing and ready to share his stacks of letters from all over the world from folks that stopped at his curve in the road. He lives inside where he works with a cot and wood stove in the corner. This gentleman reminded me of people I met throughout Greece in 1970, it was lots of fun, gotta love Greek people.

Hey what, me worry, I could hang here and whittle for a while and not worry about much of anything.

On the road to Olympia

This column of the temple of Zeus was reconstructed by Germany on the occasion of the Olympic games. Beth and Angie are dwarfed by its size.

Beth amidst the columns in Olympia

Hey its my ancient brother deep in thought.

What was left of these statues from the freize at the temple to Zeus were arranged inside. Whil veiwing these was a powerful experienc one can only imagine what the would have looked like in their orignal complete form displayes 5 plus meters from the ground as part of the structure.
