Ulm had a series of walls and fortresses around it in a very big circle. They were built to fend off the French who never showed up, and so they were never used. Naturally this doesn't stop folks from celebrating their existance and have a little historical part on occasion. Actually most folks haven't been very aware of this piece of local history until recently. Now more parts are being unearthed and their hisortical significance celebrated. Many parts of these foritfication were manned by Bavarians along with those from Wuertenberg as late as the turn of last century. I have pictures of my grandfather in very similar Bavarian uniforms.

Found your site coincidentally.
I am the officer on your pic's, just want to say hello.
If you ever return to Ulm, just give a call, so I can show you some more of our fortress.
Best wishes
Christian
